SPT foundation is a simple web app of a spreadsheet, originally developed by Prof. Dimitrios Zekkos, that carries out deterministic shallow foundation design using Standard Penetration Test (SPT) data.
The original spreadsheet was used for the following paper:Zekkos, D. P., Bray, J. D., & Der Kiureghian, A. (2004). Reliability of shallow foundation design using the standard penetration test. Proceedings ISC-2 on geotechnical and geophysical site characterization, 1575-1582. Download
You can refer to this paper for detailed explanations of the calculations done.
In the input, an average SPT blow-count N value is used for the ground below the foundation. The user is supposed to insert also values for thethe blow count number’s (N) correction factors. These are:
These values are test-dependent and can be set according to the SPT procedures that were carried in the field.
The calculations are conducted for a specific foundation width, but the option is provided for the user to put up to five foundation widths and graphically observe the differences in calculated allowable stresses for a range of foundation widths.
The app then calculates the allowable stress based on satisfying the bearing capacity criterion (using a user-defined factor of safety) and a settlement criterion (using a limit settlement value also user-defined). Calculations are conducted using various methods and equations.
A graph is generated of the results of allowable stress in relation to the foundation’s width for the different methods used.
